I think that it is fitting to begin an homage to baseball statistics with one of the more overlooked numbers, but also one of the most revealing — batters getting hit by a pitch, an HBP in the scorecard.  Call it what you will — beaned, dusted, decked, or plunked, few other statistics so insightfully illuminate the history of game.
